Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Faces Increased Legal Troubles in Sacrilege Cases
Gurmeet Ram Rahim, the chief of Dera Sacha Sauda, is likely to face further legal challenges while serving a sentence for rape and murder. The Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has approved the prosecution of Ram Rahim in three sacrilege cases from 2015.
This decision follows a recent Supreme Court ruling that lifted a stay imposed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on the trial against him.
Details of the Cases
- Theft of Guru Granth Sahib: On June 1, 2015, a Bir of the Guru Granth Sahib was stolen from a Gurudwara in Burj Jawahar Singh Wala village, Faridkot.
- Objectionable Posters: On September 24 and 25, 2015, derogatory posters against Sikhism were displayed in Bargari, Faridkot.
- Desecration of Guru Granth Sahib: On October 12, 2015, a Bir of the Guru Granth Sahib was stolen and later found torn and scattered in Bargari.
Current Status of Gurmeet Ram Rahim
Ram Rahim was released from Sunariya jail on October 2, under heavy police protection, and is currently residing at Barnawa Ashram in Uttar Pradesh.
Controversy Surrounding His Parole
His parole, granted during assembly elections, sparked controversy, with opposition parties raising concerns and filing complaints with the Election Commission. In 2017, Ram Rahim was convicted for the rape of two disciples and sentenced to 20 years in prison, in addition to being found guilty, along with three others, of the murder of a journalist over 16 years ago.
