  • Ola Electric Q1 Loss Widens to Rs 347 Cr, Revenue Up 32%

Ola Electric, India’s premier e-scooter manufacturer, announced a wider first-quarter loss on Wednesday. The company’s loss for the April-June quarter grew to Rs 347 crore ($41.4 million), compared to Rs 267 crore in the same period last year.

This increased loss is attributed to the company’s price cuts, implemented to drive demand after government incentives were reduced.

In Q1, Ola Electric achieved a significant revenue increase of 32.3%, reaching Rs 1,644 crore, up from Rs 1,243 crore a year earlier. The EBITDA loss also showed modest improvement, decreasing to Rs 205 crore from Rs 218 crore.

Despite the persistent net loss, Ola Electric’s automotive division is nearing breakeven, reflecting a slight positive shift with an EBITDA margin of 1.97% for the quarter.

Following the results announcement, Ola Electric’s stock rose by 2.38% to Rs 110.64 on the BSE, even as the Sensex experienced a marginal increase of 0.19%, closing at 79,105.88 points.

The results were disclosed after market hours, reflecting investor optimism amidst the company’s ongoing adjustments and growth trajectory.

  • NASA Considers SpaceX for Astronaut Return Starliner Issues

NASA is collaborating with SpaceX to ensure the safe return of astronauts Barry Wilmore and Sunita Williams, who are currently aboard the International Space Station (ISS) after launching on Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner spacecraft. The Starliner mission, which launched the astronauts on June 6, has encountered significant technical issues, prompting NASA to consider alternative plans for their return.

As of now, NASA is evaluating whether to use Boeing’s Starliner for the return trip or to rely on SpaceX’s Crew-9 mission, scheduled for a September launch. The Crew-9 mission could bring Wilmore and Williams back to Earth around February 2025 if the decision is made to switch. NASA plans to finalize its decision by mid-August, potentially involving top agency officials such as Associate Administrator Jim Free or Administrator Bill Nelson.

Boeing’s Starliner program has faced numerous setbacks, including a failed uncrewed test flight in 2019 and persistent technical problems, resulting in significant delays and cost overruns totaling $1.6 billion since 2016. Recent tests at NASA’s White Sands facility suggest overheating Teflon seals may have caused thruster malfunctions, but uncertainties remain about whether these issues are fully replicated in orbit.

If NASA opts for the SpaceX contingency, the Starliner would return uncrewed before Crew-9’s launch. Boeing expressed confidence in Starliner’s capabilities but acknowledged they will take necessary steps to prepare the spacecraft for an uncrewed return if required.

NASA’s decision is influenced by concerns over the potential for combined failures of helium leaks and thruster issues during Starliner’s descent. Propulsion experts are analyzing the data to guide the decision-making process, with a formal review to follow. The choice between using SpaceX or Boeing will hinge on the latest data and risk assessments.

  • Ladki Bahin Yojana Fadnavis’ Remark on Opposition Explained

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has criticized opposition parties in Maharashtra, calling them “half-brothers of women.” He claimed that their criticism of the Ladki Bahin Yojana reflects their fear of the scheme’s success.

Fadnavis argued that the opposition’s objections—ranging from challenging the scheme in court and losing, to alleging insufficient funding—are attempts to discredit the program. He accused them of hypocrisy, stating that while they attack the scheme publicly, they simultaneously use it to promote their own images with posters.

The state government has launched the My Beloved Sister Scheme, which provides poor women with a monthly deposit of 1,500 rupees into their bank accounts. This initiative was initially introduced by Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh.

The BJP government leveraged the Ladli Behan Yojana to secure a decisive victory in the assembly elections there by winning the most seats.

The opposition parties are persistently making new allegations against the scheme. They argue that it is merely an electoral ploy and will be discontinued after the elections. They also claim there are insufficient funds in the state treasury for the program and have criticized the slow pace of registering women’s names.

The state government, however, has stated that the first installment of the scheme will be deposited into women’s accounts on August 17. They have described the scheme as a Raksha Bandhan gift for the poor women in the state.
