  • Ritika Malu Arrested After Series of Dramatic Events

Nagpur: Ritika Malu, the main accused in the Ram Jhula accident case, was arrested by the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) late Wednesday night at her home in Deshpande Layout, Wardhman Nagar. The Sessions Court denied her bail application on the same day and granted the CID permission to act 214 days after the accident.

Following her arrest, several dramatic developments occurred. In an unprecedented action, the First-Class Judicial Magistrate (JMFC) opened the courtroom at 10:30 PM, enabling the CID to proceed with the arrest. Notably, the court allowed the arrest of a female accused even after sunset.

    Action Taken

A team of ten CID officers, including two female officials, entered a residence belonging to the Malu family after midnight to conduct a search operation. About 40 minutes later, the female officers left the house without Ritika Malu and proceeded to another bungalow belonging to the Malu family in the same lane. Around 1 AM, the female officers emerged from that bungalow with Ritika Malu, drawing a large crowd of neighbors.

    What is the Case?

On February 24, Ritika Malu drove her vehicle at high speed on the Ram Jhula bridge, running over Mohammad Hussain Ghulam Mustafa and Mohammad Atif Mohammad Zia shortly after midnight. After the accident, Ritika and her friend Madhuri Shishir Sarda fled the scene. A few days later, both surrendered to the police and admitted to the incident. The Tehsil police subsequently filed a bailable case against them under Sections 297, 338, and 304(a) of the IPC.

    Request to the Court

As per a Supreme Court ruling, a female accused cannot be arrested after sunset. However, if there are compelling reasons for the arrest or a risk of the accused fleeing the state or country, investigating officers can seek permission from the judge of the court handling the case. With the court’s approval, a female accused can be arrested even after sunset.

  • Rickshaw Drivers Arrested for Conning Elderly Woman as CID

Varanasi Police Arrest Con Artists Targeting Elderly Passengers

In Varanasi, the Kotwali police have successfully arrested two con artists specializing in robbing elderly passengers. One suspect operates a cycle rickshaw, while the other poses as a CID officer. Their latest victim, an elderly woman, was deceived on September 23, prompting immediate police action and the filing of a case against them.

Authorities were alarmed to find that a rickshaw driver was involved in such criminal activities. Following their arrest, both suspects were remanded to jail under relevant charges.

In her FIR, the elderly woman recounted her journey from Maidagin to Beniyabag. At Nakkhas Chauraha, a man entered her rickshaw, claiming police were conducting checks ahead and that he was with CID. He demanded to see her belongings, then swiftly snatched her earrings, ₹5,000 in cash, and her mobile phone before fleeing. The rickshaw driver also abandoned the vehicle and escaped, leading to the filing of a case under Section 319(2) of the IPC.

To track down the suspects, police reviewed CCTV footage from Maidagin and Chowk police stations. A tip-off about the suspects being near a public toilet close to a cow shelter resulted in their prompt arrest. The suspects were identified as Domaan from Salaarpur and Billu from Jalahupur.

During interrogation, Billu revealed their method: Domaan would drive the rickshaw while he impersonated a CID officer, specifically targeting vulnerable elderly passengers. This case highlights the importance of vigilance among seniors to safeguard against such scams in the community.

  • Goa Records Highest Unemployment Rate in the Country

Goa, renowned as India’s top tourist destination attracting visitors from across the globe, is facing a surprising crisis: it has emerged as the state with the highest unemployment rate in the country. The recent Periodic Labor Force Survey (PLFS) for 2023-24 has revealed shocking statistics, placing Goa’s unemployment rate at 8.7%, nearly double the national average of 4.5%. This marks a slight decrease from the previous year’s rate of 9.7%.

In stark contrast, larger states like Madhya Pradesh boast an unemployment rate of less than 1%. The situation is particularly alarming for women in Goa, with an unemployment rate of 16.8%, significantly higher than the national average of 4.9%. Additionally, the labor participation rate in Goa stands at 39%, below the national figure of 42.3%, indicating a concerning trend in job engagement.

The survey also highlights the employment distribution in Goa: 55% of the workforce is in the service sector, 19.7% in agriculture, and 30.5% in other industries. However, these sectors are struggling to create sufficient job opportunities for new entrants, especially among youth and women.

While states like Haryana have seen improvements—its unemployment rate dropped from 6.1% to 3.4%—Goa’s persistent issues emphasize the need for strategic measures to boost job creation and economic stability. The data reveals an urgent call to action for policymakers to address these challenges and foster a more inclusive job market for all residents.

  • Timberland’s Exit : The Challenges of Entering India

Timberland’s Journey in India: A Lesson in Branding

Today, we explore the story of Timberland, an international shoe brand that entered India with high hopes but exited after just six years. Despite the backing of industry giant Reliance, Timberland couldn’t establish a foothold in the competitive Indian market.

Timberland, an American brand known for its high-quality hiking boots and outdoor products, launched in India in 2009 under a licensing agreement with Reliance Industries Ltd. With 14 stores opened quickly, including exclusive outlets, the brand seemed poised for success. However, Indian consumers remained loyal to Woodland, a well-established local brand that had already created a strong identity.

The legal battle between Timberland and Woodland added to the challenges. Both brands had similar logos featuring trees and leaves, leading many to mistakenly view Timberland as a duplicate product. This confusion, coupled with the loyalty of Indian customers to Woodland, meant that Timberland struggled to gain recognition.

Founded in the 1970s, Timberland had a long history, while Woodland was established in 1990 by Avatar Singh and entered the Indian market in 1992. Woodland quickly became synonymous with outdoor footwear in India, making it difficult for Timberland to compete.

By 2015, after failing to overcome these hurdles, Timberland withdrew from India. Meanwhile, Woodland reported a turnover of 900 crore rupees for the fiscal year 2021-22, showcasing its resilience and ongoing popularity.

In conclusion, Timberland’s experience in India serves as a reminder of the importance of branding and understanding local markets. As the saying goes, “Better late than never,” but sometimes, it’s just too late.
