    In Varanasi, the Kotwali police have successfully arrested two con artists specializing in robbing elderly passengers. One suspect operates a cycle rickshaw, while the other poses as a CID officer. Their latest victim, an elderly woman, was deceived on September 23, prompting immediate police action and the filing of a case against them.

    Authorities were alarmed to find that a rickshaw driver was involved in such criminal activities. Following their arrest, both suspects were remanded to jail under relevant charges.

    In her FIR, the elderly woman recounted her journey from Maidagin to Beniyabag. At Nakkhas Chauraha, a man entered her rickshaw, claiming police were conducting checks ahead and that he was with CID. He demanded to see her belongings, then swiftly snatched her earrings, ₹5,000 in cash, and her mobile phone before fleeing. The rickshaw driver also abandoned the vehicle and escaped, leading to the filing of a case under Section 319(2) of the IPC.

    To track down the suspects, police reviewed CCTV footage from Maidagin and Chowk police stations. A tip-off about the suspects being near a public toilet close to a cow shelter resulted in their prompt arrest. The suspects were identified as Domaan from Salaarpur and Billu from Jalahupur.

    During interrogation, Billu revealed their method: Domaan would drive the rickshaw while he impersonated a CID officer, specifically targeting vulnerable elderly passengers. This case highlights the importance of vigilance among seniors to safeguard against such scams in the community.

    Over the past six to seven weeks, major Indian IT companies, including Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys, Tech Mahindra, and LTIMindtree, have faced an unexpected wave of penalty and tax orders from Goods and Services Tax (GST) departments nationwide. These firms have collectively received at least 21 penalty notices from GST offices in several states, including Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Visakhapatnam, Rajasthan, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Mumbai.

    Although the penalties and tax demands range from a few thousand to several crores of rupees, the firms are actively contesting most of these notices. Industry experts suggest that the increase in tax notices is partly due to the expansion of IT firms into smaller cities, where local tax authorities are now more rigorously scrutinizing operations. This heightened scrutiny follows a major Rs 32,403 crore GST evasion case against India’s second-largest IT firm, concerning services provided by its overseas branches.

    From July to September, TCS received six notices from Chennai, Goa, Visakhapatnam, Uttar Pradesh, and Bengaluru, with the highest demand of Rs 1.17 crore originating from Visakhapatnam. Infosys faced six notices from states such as Odisha, Chennai, Punjab, and Bengaluru. Tech Mahindra received seven notices, while LTIMindtree encountered two during the same period.

Ignoring these disputes could hinder their ability to defend tax positions in the future, as their businesses continue to expand and tax liabilities potentially increase.

    The trainee doctor was found dead in a seminude state in the hospital’s seminar hall. Police have arrested Sanjay Roy, a civil volunteer who was seen on CCTV entering the seminar hall at 4:03 am.

    Roy has claimed to the CBI that he is innocent and that the victim was already unconscious when he entered.

    The CBI has also arrested Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the hospital, on charges of corruption.

    Ghosh is under investigation for allegedly delaying the victim’s parents from viewing her body for three hours and ordering renovation work near the crime scene.
